Two days had gone by since Clayton gave Grady the Zeal Hammer. Those days were spent enjoying the company of the villagers in Taius but after gorging himself on food and enjoying the mountain air, Clayton was as restless as heâd ever been.
After relaxing in Taius, his brief return to Nalore followed. With no answers, he took an Essence Tablet back to Portum to continue his investigation. Upon his arrival, Eita was there to greet him in the center of the village.
âYou have returned,â Eita said, his smile as friendly as ever behind his beard.
âWas that a surprise?â
âNot at all. It has been a few days since you began your search for the Zealinite. You donât carry Zeal with you now. I trust it is in good hands.â
âBetter hands than anybody elseâs. Without Grady, I wouldnât have gotten to this point. The Zealinite I took from Sartos is a little different from usual, but Grady wonât need more time to get everything just right.â
âEverything must be just right if we are to succeed in this endeavor. Might I be of assistance to you in the meantime?â
âI wanted to talk to you about the archives and the records of the Ferrum. But itâs been a few days since Iâve visited the ladies. Theyâre all right, arenât they?â
âYou can see for yourself.â
Clayton walked with Eita into Veleneâs chambers. Just as he remembered, Velene stood in front of the wall with the glowing purple etchings. And on all of the tables around him, his companions remained peacefully asleep under cotton sheets.
Clayton stood next to Jalise and put a hand to her cheek. âStrange. Sheâs been out for so long but sheâs still warm.â
âShe is still alive,â Eita said. âHer stasis will end and her body will have adjusted to the power of the essence in the air.â
Clayton looked at Velene, whoâd been ignoring him this entire time. âHow are things coming along?â
âNothing has changed since your departure,â Velene said without looking at him. âOpening a portal to the Maledict is not a simple manner. Rest easy and know that everything is proceeding as expected.â
âYeah, yeah.â Clayton put his hands on his hips and walked over to Mirella. âSo peacefully asleep⦠I wonder whatâs on her mind right now. Someone from Azure must have pretty wild dreams.â
âWe can hope they are in a pleasant state of wonder,â Eita said. âWhen this is over, they will be fully recovered, fresh and anew.â
âThatâd be niceâ¦â Clayton straightened up and sighed. âNow⦠About those archives.â
âOf course, Ferrum. Just follow me.â
Clayton turned away but something caught his eye. His head jerked back to Mirella when he swore he saw movement. His eyes widened but Mirella stayed still.
âDid you see that?â Clayton said.
âHmm?â Eita moved next to Mirella.
âShe moved. Like her whole body twitched or something.â
âShe appears as still as she was before.â
Clayton waited but there was nothing. âMaybe youâre right. Maybeââ
Mirella suddenly twitched again. This time, Eita noticed it as well. And he was just as surprised as Clayton.
