Two days had gone by since Clayton gave Grady the Zeal Hammer. Those days were spent enjoying the company of the villagers in Taius but after gorging himself on food and enjoying the mountain air, Clayton was as restless as he’d ever been.

After relaxing in Taius, his brief return to Nalore followed. With no answers, he took an Essence Tablet back to Portum to continue his investigation. Upon his arrival, Eita was there to greet him in the center of the village.

“You have returned,” Eita said, his smile as friendly as ever behind his beard.

“Was that a surprise?”

“Not at all. It has been a few days since you began your search for the Zealinite. You don’t carry Zeal with you now. I trust it is in good hands.”

“Better hands than anybody else’s. Without Grady, I wouldn’t have gotten to this point. The Zealinite I took from Sartos is a little different from usual, but Grady won’t need more time to get everything just right.”

“Everything must be just right if we are to succeed in this endeavor. Might I be of assistance to you in the meantime?”

“I wanted to talk to you about the archives and the records of the Ferrum. But it’s been a few days since I’ve visited the ladies. They’re all right, aren’t they?”

“You can see for yourself.”

Clayton walked with Eita into Velene’s chambers. Just as he remembered, Velene stood in front of the wall with the glowing purple etchings. And on all of the tables around him, his companions remained peacefully asleep under cotton sheets.

Clayton stood next to Jalise and put a hand to her cheek. “Strange. She’s been out for so long but she’s still warm.”

“She is still alive,” Eita said. “Her stasis will end and her body will have adjusted to the power of the essence in the air.”

Clayton looked at Velene, who’d been ignoring him this entire time. “How are things coming along?”

“Nothing has changed since your departure,” Velene said without looking at him. “Opening a portal to the Maledict is not a simple manner. Rest easy and know that everything is proceeding as expected.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Clayton put his hands on his hips and walked over to Mirella. “So peacefully asleep… I wonder what’s on her mind right now. Someone from Azure must have pretty wild dreams.”

“We can hope they are in a pleasant state of wonder,” Eita said. “When this is over, they will be fully recovered, fresh and anew.”

“That’d be nice…” Clayton straightened up and sighed. “Now… About those archives.”

“Of course, Ferrum. Just follow me.”

Clayton turned away but something caught his eye. His head jerked back to Mirella when he swore he saw movement. His eyes widened but Mirella stayed still.

“Did you see that?” Clayton said.

“Hmm?” Eita moved next to Mirella.

“She moved. Like her whole body twitched or something.”

“She appears as still as she was before.”

Clayton waited but there was nothing. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe—”

Mirella suddenly twitched again. This time, Eita noticed it as well. And he was just as surprised as Clayton.
